Asia/Pacific Office Director Reg Wilson attends Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition (July, 2009)

June was an exciting month for the Asia/Pacific region of the IDA as Director Reg Wilson traveled to mainland China to attend the East’s largest lighting trade show, the Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition. The show, which took place 9-12 June 2009, was held at the China Import and Export Fair Pazhou Complex and featured 50,000 visitors from more than 90 countries. Mr. Wilson took the opportunity to visit with exhibitors of outdoor lighting and lighting control applications to receive the most up-to-date information on products entering the Asia/Pacific and global marketplace.

Exciting Liaison with LUCI (Lighting Urban Community International) (July, 2009)

One of the most exciting connections made at the exhibition was the meeting with European based LUCI (Lighting Urban Community International) during and following their major conference , Strategies in Urban Lighting. LUCI is a consortium of cities and lighting professionals “engaged in using light as a major tool for urban, social, and economic development, with a concern for sustainability and environmental issues.” Comprising of more than 50 member cities on four continents and 20 associated members (those in the industry), LUCI’s network aims to 1) make use of light as a tool for urban development, 2) promote an urban identity by means of artistic and technical choices, and 3) take into account environmental and sustainable development issues. Mr. Wilson described a number of IDA theories and methods to Mr. Alexandre Colombani, LUCI’s general manager. The meeting consisted of a multi-hour discussion where both parties listened with intense respect on the other association’s goals and achievements. While still in the preliminary phase, a working relationship or partnership is sure to come from this initial encounter.

In other news, the Asia/Pacific region is building its strength by recruiting interested parties as Section heads. A meeting in the Guangdong Province, is likely to result in the third Section of the People’s Republic of China.

Considering the money being burned, the energy consumed, and how simple the remedy is - just switch off - the message emanating from this symbolic move is rather grim: How unwilling we are to reduce the unnecessary glare around us. After reading about a vaunted 2.1-million-yuan (US$307,000) "moonlight town" project in Shaanxi (Shanghai Daily, 08 April), I regret to say that such sins of illumination are still being committed with complacency...
