International Dark-Sky Association
The Nightscape Authority

Dear GreenBuild Attendee,

Thank you for visiting the International Dark-Sky Association booth at the recent USGBC GreenBuild Conference & Expo at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL. We hope we sparked your interest in dark skies and its natural relation to green building and global sustainability.

IDA is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserve and protect the nighttime environment and our heritage of dark skies through quality outdoor lighting. We have a number of projects and programs that educate and encourage the public, professionals, and manufacturers on the importance of dark skies, remedies for improper lighting, and ways in which these impact energy and sustainability. Please take a moment to explore these programs on our Web site, www.darksky.org.

A Sampling of Our Projects and Programs Include:

  • The Fixture Seal of Approval Program: Are you in need of an effective, efficient, and dark sky friendly light for your next project? Are you unsure if the light you’ve selected includes all of these elements? Search our reference catalog of IDA certified Fixture Seal of Approval products. The FSA is the ONLY third-party certification currently available on the market today and is guaranteed to be friendly and efficient in the nighttime environment in our communities.
  • Nightscape, IDA’s award-winning publication of the IDA: Are you up-to-date on the most recent outdoor lighting codes and ordinances? In search of a refreshing vacation under the stars? Interested in editorials about leading industry issues, such as the use of sky beams or the requirements of LEED SS Credit 8? Then you should read IDA’s publication, Nightscape, winner of the Arizona Society of Association Executives 2007 Excellence in Communications Award.
  • The 20th Anniversary Annual Meeting and Conference/Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Training: Join us as we celebrate 20 years of protecting the nightscape! Featured talks include city streetlight retrofits, advances in lighting technology and energy efficiency, planning for the night environment, dark skies/dark nights and their importance beyond astronomy, and much more. Following the 20th Anniversary Conference is the Basic CPTED training course taught by the National Institute of Crime Prevention. Information is available on both events here or on our Web site, www.darksky.org. We are still accepting This email address is being protected from spambots. Don’t be blinded by the glare of improper lighting:

it difficult to see with glare.

Image 2: The same floodlight as in
Image 1 only pointed to the ground,
making visibility much easier.
