DarkSky International has signed a Collaborative Agreement with AstronEra, establishing a formal framework to advance International Dark Sky Place certifications, responsible outdoor lighting, dark sky conservation, and sustainable astrotourism in Maharashtra, India.

With this agreement, AstronEra becomes the only organization in Maharashtra to have entered into a formal collaborative agreement with DarkSky International, representing an important milestone in expanding the global dark sky movement into one of the world’s fastest-growing nations.

The collaboration builds upon significant progress already taking place in Maharashtra. On 23 August 2025, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra announced the State’s Dark Sky Initiative during the National Space Day celebrations. Since then, AstronEra has been leading technical discussions with multiple Government departments on the development of Maharashtra’s proposed Dark Sky Policy, implementation of responsible outdoor lighting practices, and the creation of a framework for International Dark Sky Place certification.

Earlier this year, eleven pilot sites across Maharashtra were identified to begin preparations for International Dark Sky Place designation. These sites are expected to demonstrate how protecting naturally dark night skies can support biodiversity conservation, scientific research, responsible lighting, and sustainable rural economies through astrotourism.

DarkSky International’s globally recognized International Dark Sky Places program has become the international benchmark for protecting exceptional night skies. Through this collaboration, AstronEra will provide technical guidance, policy support, stakeholder coordination, and implementation assistance while working with Government agencies and local communities.

AstronEra has played a leading role in advancing dark sky conservation in India through policy advocacy, scientific outreach, community engagement, and sustainable tourism initiatives. Its Founder and CEO, Shweta Kulkarni, is internationally recognized for her leadership in dark sky conservation, policy development, and sustainable astrotourism initiatives in India. She received the 2024 Dark Sky Defender Award (Asia), presented by DarkSky International, for her contributions.

The collaboration reflects DarkSky International’s commitment to supporting regional leadership that combines international standards with locally driven conservation efforts, creating long-term benefits for communities, biodiversity, and future generations.
