TUCSON, Ariz. — DarkSky International is proud to celebrate 60 years of Star Trek as an official nonprofit partner of the Star Trek 60th Anniversary Celebration, honoring one of the most influential science fiction franchises in history.

For six decades, Star Trek has inspired generations to look beyond the horizon and boldly go where no one has gone before. This partnership celebrates the profound role that the night sky—and our ability to experience it—has played not only in shaping Star Trek, but in inspiring science fiction, scientific discovery, and humanity’s enduring curiosity about our place in the universe.

“Star Trek has inspired generations not only to explore and discover, but to imagine a future defined by hope, curiosity, and possibility,” said Ruskin Hartley, CEO and Executive Director of DarkSky International. “As we celebrate its 60th anniversary, we’re reminded that protecting dark skies means protecting humanity’s connection to the cosmos and ensuring future generations can experience the same sense of wonder and inspiration that have driven exploration throughout history.”

As part of the partnership, DarkSky has launched a special Star Trek-inspired activation in conjunction with its annual Capture the Dark nighttime photography contest, featuring a special pop-up category inviting participants to submit photographs of themselves and others performing the iconic Vulcan salute—”Live long and prosper”—beneath the night sky.

As we celebrate more than half a century of Star Trek, we are reminded that every journey to the stars begins here on Earth, with our feet on the ground and our eyes turned toward the night sky. By protecting our shared view of the universe, we ensure that future generations can continue to look up in awe and wonder—and boldly imagine humanity’s next great journey.
