Important Update Regarding IDSP Application Deadlines
In response to growing interest in the International Dark Sky Places Program (IDSP), IDA’s International Dark Sky Places Committee (DSPC) has approved a revised application submission and review schedule for the program, beginning in 2020. The 2020 schedule is available on the IDA website.
The new schedule, approved by the DSPC on December 3, 2019, reduces the number of times IDSP applications may be submitted for review by the DSPC from six to four per year. This revised schedule grants the DSPC additional time to thoroughly review submitted applications before each Committee meeting and best uphold the high standards of IDA’s IDSP program.
The new IDSP application submission and review schedule also ensures that IDA staff can spend more time focused on supporting the IDSP program as it continues to grow. In 2019, IDA received inquiries about International Dark Sky Place designation from a record 250 places worldwide and supported more than 100 active applications.

We understand these changes may impact sites’ plans to submit an application for review by the DSPC. If you have concerns about this revised schedule, please contact IDA’s International Dark Sky Places Program Manager, Adam Dalton via email at [email protected].
We look forward to supporting more work protecting dark places in 2020 and beyond.
