Jackson Hole Airport

About

The Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is a public-use commercial airport located in Jackson, Wyoming. It is the only commercial airport located in a National Park (Grand Teton) and is dedicated to being an industry leader in environmental responsibility, green building initiatives, and energy efficiency. By prioritizing these initiatives, the Airport not only enhances our community, but also strengthens its dedication to preserving our natural surroundings. The Jackson Hole Airport’s unique location inside Grand Teton National Park requires extra measures to safeguard our natural environment for future generations.

The Airport is a valuable partner in supporting Grand Teton National Park’s goal of protecting the extraordinary wildlife, scenic lakes and rivers, natural resources, and alpine environment that is our backyard. The Airport’s Board is composed of members that are very passionate about conservation and responsible operations. The Jackson Hole Airport Board also owns and operates Jackson Hole Flight Services, which is a general aviation airport.

In 2025, the Airport adopted a DarkSky friendly Lighting Management Plan (LMP), improved landside lighting fixtures and systems to comply with DarkSky requirements, and initiated efforts to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our night sky. JAC staff has upgraded hundreds of fixtures, replacing non-conforming outdoor lighting with 3000K CCT lights. All replacement lighting is in full conformance with DarkSky requirements, and current International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) standards. Lighting that cannot be fully extinguished after normal business hours, for operational or safety reasons, will be reduced using fixture-mounted motion sensors that reduce the lighting to 30%.

Beginning in 2016, JAC has been engaged in Sky Quality Measurement (SQM) surveys at ten different locations throughout the facility. These surveys are completed under clear skies in the new moon phase. In the spring of 2025, the Airport also intends to install a permanent sky quality meter (TESS-W) to provide continuous measurements and a live feed of the SQM readings.

JAC has been proactive in communicating the importance of preserving the night sky as a natural resource, creating videos and sharing content to their website and social channels. The Airport also collaborates with local entities, such as the National Park and Wyoming Stargazing, to produce educational content.
