Liberty Hill, Texas, is a growing Hill Country community located just northwest of Austin in Williamson County. Known for its limestone hills, oak woodlands, and wide-open skies, Liberty Hill has long cherished its rural roots and starlit nights. As development accelerated, however, the community began to notice the effects of increasing light pollution.
In 2020, a group of concerned residents launched Save Our Stars, a grassroots initiative focused on preserving Liberty Hill’s dark skies. What began with backyard lighting assessments and neighborhood outreach evolved into a citywide movement. Volunteers partnered with the Planning & Zoning Commission to help pass an Outdoor Lighting Ordinance in 2022, conducted an inventory of more than 1,100 light fixtures, and initiated a multi-year retrofit plan for city-owned facilities and streetlights.
Beyond infrastructure, the dark skies campaign emphasizes public education and community involvement. Save Our Stars regularly hosts star parties, leads night-sky audits, participates in local festivals, and promotes its “Night Sky Friendly Business” program. Collaborations with local organizations have helped cultivate awareness and long-term stewardship.
Visitors to Liberty Hill are encouraged to experience the region’s natural nighttime beauty. City Park, River Ranch Park, surrounding rural areas, and community-led stargazing events offer opportunities to reconnect with the night sky. Thanks to dedicated volunteers and proactive leadership, Liberty Hill has become a model for small towns seeking to balance growth with environmental conservation.
