About

Parc national du Mont-Tremblant was the first national park in the Canadian province of Québec. Located 120 kilometers north of Montréal, it offers visitors outdoor activities, including canoeing, hiking, climbing via Ferrata, swimming, and stargazing. Daily access to the park is allowed until midnight for astronomy activities at one of three designated locations.

Sépaq, the agency in charge of the park management, is mandated to provide access to outdoor recreational opportunities and to protect biodiversity. The extensive wilderness (1,466 km2) of Parc national du Mont-Tremblant is home to 40 mammal species, including wolves. Sépaq monitors water quality, endangered species, anthropic interference, and night sky quality.

The park began taking night sky quality measurements in May 2019, making it possible to track light pollution trends by comparing data collected over extended periods. It identified nearby sources of artificial skyglow and has been working with elected officials and residents in neighboring municipalities to raise awareness of light pollution and its impact on the nocturnal environment. These efforts have included streetlight conversions in several surrounding municipalities and upgrades to existing lighting on site.

Visitors who attend outreach activities learn about light pollution by viewing photographs of converted lighting fixtures within the park. Programs about the nocturnal environment, wonders of the night sky, and dark sky conservation are routinely offered to the public.

Parc national du Mont-Tremblant emphasizes partnerships with stakeholders in neighboring communities and will continue to host activities designed to raise public awareness of light pollution in and adjacent to the park.
