About

The Regional Natural Park of Morvan is part of the Massif Central Park network, located in the center of Burgundy. It is a mid-mountain area, covered with forests and meadows. This territory, composed of small towns and numerous isolated hamlets, has a low population density. Accessibility is supported by a well-developed network of roads and trails spanning the entire region.

The International Dark Sky Reserve designation—Réserve Internationale de Ciel Étoilé du Morvan (RICE Morvan)—is located in the southern part of the Park and covers 1,297 km². It includes a core zone of 16 municipalities and 455 km² encompassing several protected natural areas. The Morvan benefits from a favorable nighttime environment, being far from major cities. It is also a reservoir of biodiversity, home to rich, diverse, and unique flora and fauna.

Encouraged by the certification, the Park and its partners are committed to continuing their positive efforts to protect the starry sky and preserve biodiversity. Their goals include ongoing renovation of public lighting to expand the RICE zone, raising awareness among private stakeholders to reduce pollution, developing new observation points throughout the region, and supporting the Château-Chinon astronomical observatory project.
