What we do International Dark Sky Places

Sun Valley Resort

A snow-covered mountain valley glows beneath a clear, star-filled night sky. Warm lights from the resort village illuminate the landscape below, while ski runs trace the surrounding peaks and thousands of stars remain visible overhead, highlighting the contrast between responsible outdoor lighting and the natural darkness of the night sky.

Sun Valley Resort invites guests to experience some of the darkest and most spectacular night skies in the American West.

Certified through DarkSky International’s DarkSky Approved Lodging & Resorts Program, the resort combines responsible outdoor lighting with breathtaking alpine scenery, creating unforgettable opportunities for stargazing, nighttime recreation, and wellness beneath star-filled skies. Located on the edge of the internationally recognized Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, visitors can explore everything from panoramic views atop Bald Mountain to the peaceful meadows of Trail Creek and the remarkably dark skies of nearby Galena Summit.

Beyond world-class skiing, hiking, biking, fly fishing, and cultural events, Sun Valley is expanding its dark sky experiences with guided stargazing programs, astronomy events, and educational offerings that invite guests to discover the beauty of the night. Whether you’re watching the Milky Way emerge above the mountains or simply enjoying an evening under naturally dark skies, Sun Valley offers a rare opportunity to reconnect with nature after sunset.
