Wild Hideaways is a small, adult-only, dog-friendly retreat at Laharanshermeen in the heart of the Mealagh Valley near Bantry, in West Cork on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. The site sits on 3.5 rewilded acres with panoramic views over Bantry Bay and the surrounding hills, a quiet rural setting that holds some of the darkest skies in southern Ireland on clear nights.
The property is made up of six self-catering lodges, each sleeping a maximum of two, with a private alfresco hot bath set under open sky and its own firepit. Shared facilities include the Bayview Sauna, a handcrafted electric sauna with a cold plunge, open from 5pm to 9pm each evening, The Sanctuary, the on-site spa, and The Wild Sky Dome, a transparent geodesic dome built for watching the sky in comfort. The retreat runs on an eco footing: rewilded ground, low-light dark-sky practices, Irish handmade goods in the lodges, and food sourced locally so the spend stays in the valley. Guests come alone, with a partner or a friend, or with their dog.
The night sky experience at Wild Hideaways is grounded in the place itself. In The Wild Sky Dome, guests book a guided stargazing session that opens with a meditation written for this valley, connecting the stories of the constellations overhead to the ancient knowledge of the stars held in the surrounding landscape, before the telescope and the rest of the session are their own. About a mile from the site stands the Kealkill Stone Circle, a Bronze Age axial circle on the slopes of Maughanaclea Hill, built by people who tracked the movements of the sun, moon and stars from this same valley some four thousand years ago. The old Irish calendar still turns on the same sky: Samhain at the end of October opens the dark half of the year and the winter solstice marks its deepest point, both read from ground like this. Guests are encouraged to walk to the stone circle as part of their stay and to pair the walk with their session, so that the experience of the night sky is rooted in the deep history of the place.
Wild Hideaways has formalised a Lightscape Management Plan as part of its DarkSky certification. All outdoor lodge, sauna, and group-area lighting is on motion sensors. Pathway lighting is kept to the minimum needed for safety, with warmer colour temperatures used throughout and shielded fittings directing light downward. Guests receive a torch on arrival and a clear explanation of why the site is intentionally low-lit at night.
Wild Hideaways is open all year round. Access is by booking only, with a two-night minimum at weekends and a three-night minimum during peak summer. Guided sessions in The Wild Sky Dome can also be booked by visitors who are not staying overnight. The whole property can be taken on an exclusive-use basis for retreats and private groups of up to twelve adults.
