DarkSky International has officially designated Kosmos Stargazing Resort & Spa, located in Colorado’s San Luis Valley, as aDarkSky Approved Lodging. This recognition reflects Kosmos’s commitment to responsible outdoor lighting practices that protect the night sky while offering guests an immersive experience centered on stargazing, environmental stewardship, and a meaningful connection to the natural world.

Located in Colorado’s San Luis Valley, Kosmos Stargazing Resort & Spa is set within a high desert landscape known for its expansive horizons, minimal light pollution, and strong connection to the natural environment. The surrounding region is characterized by wide open spaces, mountain views, and some of the darkest night skies in the United States, creating conditions well suited for night sky observation. This remote setting supports both quiet retreat and intentional engagement with the natural rhythms of day and night.

To achieve DarkSky Approved Lodging certification, Kosmos undertook a comprehensive review of its outdoor lighting design and operational practices. This process included transitioning exterior lighting to meet DarkSky’s standards by minimizing light trespass and carefully controlling light levels and direction. These measures were implemented to reduce skyglow while maintaining safety and functionality across the property, ensuring that nighttime illumination supports both guests and the surrounding environment.

In parallel with physical lighting improvements, Kosmos emphasized education and awareness as a core component of its certification journey. The resort integrates dark sky principles into the guest experience through guided stargazing sessions, where guests learn about the cosmos, the night sky, and how to use astronomy equipment, while also encouraging responsible nighttime practices and sharing information about the impacts of light pollution on ecosystems.

This approach is supported through intentional programming, including the planned development of a dedicated Stargazing Park on property designed to welcome both overnight guests and visiting stargazers. The space is intended to host guided observations and star parties, while providing access to a central telescope and accommodating astronomers and astrophotographers traveling with their own equipment. Through these efforts, Kosmos seeks to foster a deeper understanding of astronomy and night sky conservation while creating respectful and informed opportunities for engagement with the nocturnal environment.

“Protecting the night sky is central to the experience we aim to offer at Kosmos,” said Gamal Jadue Zalaquett, CEO at Kosmos Stargazing Resort & Spa. “DarkSky Approved Lodging certification affirms our approach to creating spaces that invite quiet observation, learning, and a deeper connection with the natural world.”

Looking ahead, Kosmos plans to continue strengthening its role in night sky preservation through expanded stargazing experiences and educational initiatives. The resort is preparing to grow its astronomy programming beyond overnight stays through a dedicated Kosmos Stargazing initiative, which will include guided sessions for non-overnight visitors, smart telescope rentals, private and public stargazing events, and astrophotography education. Through these efforts, Kosmos aims to support broader engagement with astronomy and dark sky conservation while fostering an informed community committed to protecting the night sky.
