ULUM Moab officially certified DarkSky Approved by DarkSky International

Moab, Utah
DarkSky International is pleased to announce the official certification of ULUM Moab as a DarkSky Approved Lodging site. Located just outside Moab, Utah—home to the highest concentration of certified International Dark Sky Places in the world—ULUM’s commitment to responsible lighting helps protect a natural resource that defines the visitor experience in this region: the night sky.
As light pollution grows at an alarming rate—nearly 10% globally each year—ULUM demonstrates that human-built spaces and the natural night can coexist. The ULUM Moab outdoor resort has adopted lighting practices aligned with the DarkSky Approved program, which centers on the Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting at Night. This includes the use of fully shielded fixtures that prevent light from spilling into the night sky, along with meeting requirements for appropriate lumen levels and correlated color temperature (CCT). Together, these practices reduce skyglow and glare, minimizing the disruption to the nighttime environment and creating an immersive experience for stargazing guests.
Nestled beneath a dramatic crescent-shaped rimrock, the property features a collection of elevated luxury canvas tents designed to minimize environmental impact while providing a one-of-a-kind guest experience. Thoughtfully oriented and newly outfitted with dark sky-friendly lighting, the resort allows guests to fully experience the incredibly dark skies of Utah’s high desert.
As part of the requirements for being an official DarkSky Approved Lodging, ULUM Moab offers dark sky-themed programming, including guided stargazing activities and accessible outdoor fire pits and spaces perfect for late nights under the stars. Guests can also take advantage of nighttime experiences at nearby parks, including Arches and Canyonlands National Parks—both officially certified by DarkSky as International Dark Sky Parks.
The seventh lodging location to receive this certification, notably joining five Under Canvas camp locations throughout Utah and Arizona that share the accolade, ULUM Moab joins a growing and prestigious list of hospitality properties around the world taking meaningful action to reduce light pollution and protect the nighttime environment. In doing so, it contributes to a global movement that recognizes the night not only as a backdrop for recreation but as an important and cherished resource.
