About

Located at the south-west end of the Alps, where the mountains plunge into the Mediterranean Sea, the Alpes Azur Mercantour – Mont Mounier 2,817 m International Dark Sky Reserve is characterized by exceptional natural heritage. It features grand landscapes shaped by a long geological history still visible today, remarkable biodiversity resulting from the convergence of Alpine and Mediterranean influences, and a climate that has made it a favored tourist destination since the 19th century. The presence of a natural frontier formed by 3,000-meter peaks close to the coast has fostered a unique cultural, military, religious, and linguistic heritage.

Originally designated in 2019, the reserve became the first International Dark Sky Reserve in the world to expand its certified boundaries in 2026. The expansion increased the reserve from 2,300 to 3,700 km², growing from 75 to 92 municipalities and now encompassing the entirety of Mercantour National Park.

Astronomy occupies a singular place in the character of the region. Its geographic location attracted astronomers as early as the late 19th century, and Mont Mounier (2,817 m) was among the first mountain observatories. This interest continued throughout the 20th century, and the Calern Plateau Observatory remains active today. The reserve also offers exceptional opportunities for amateur astronomers to experience some of Europe’s most pristine night skies.
