About

The ancient hamlet of Thorington Street, Suffolk, is a small community with a big idea. It lies at the centre of the internationally renowned Dedham Vale, a 35-square-mile area that forms the core of the Dedham Vale National Landscape, stretching from the Stour Estuary in the east to Arger Fen near Assington. Thorington Street seeks to be known as an exemplar of a community working together to combat the proliferation of unnecessary and intrusive exterior lighting throughout the parish and county. Its residents have agreed to uphold the defined tenets of dark sky conservation. Despite being only two hours from London, it was recognised in January 2026 as an International Dark Sky Community by DarkSky International.

At its heart is the new Dark Sky Discovery Centre, opened in August 2024. Access to the Centre is available by joining the mailing list at dedhamvaleastronomy.com, where a programme of events is advertised. Professional astronomers are on hand for stargazing, astrophotography, and astronomy talks. The Centre, owned by the National Trust, is open to all, and National Trust membership is not required. The Centre works in partnership with the National Trust and the Dedham Vale National Landscape to promote astrotourism, helping local businesses attract visitors eager to experience the unspoiled night skies of Thorington Street.

Thorington Street is the first and only Dark Sky Community in England and joins other committed groups in Scotland, Wales, and the Channel Islands. The National Trust’s General Manager for Essex & Suffolk Countryside emphasises the importance of preserving natural darkness as an essential part of our shared heritage, influencing generations of scientists, authors, and philosophers.

Unique character: The Dedham Vale has inspired some of England’s most celebrated artists, from John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough to Alfred Munnings, Paul Nash, Cedric Morris, and Maggi Hambling. Immersed among unspoilt meadows and hills, unmown verges and rough tracks, and crossed by the Rivers Stour and Brett, it is quintessential English lowland countryside, protected in perpetuity as a National Landscape.

Location: Thorington Street Dark Sky Discovery Centre, CO6 4SY, is situated at the eastern end of the hamlet of Thorington Street, opposite Thorington Hall on the B1068 between Stoke-by-Nayland and Higham, Suffolk.
