What we do

Protecting dark skies and the nighttime environment worldwide.

Founded in 1988 as the International Dark-Sky Association, DarkSky is the global authority on quality lighting and dark sky conservation. Through bold programs and proven policy initiatives, DarkSky works to protect the nighttime environment and reduce light pollution worldwide.

Leading global dark sky conservation

DarkSky’s flagship International Dark Sky Places program recognizes and supports parks, communities, and other places around the world working to protect the nighttime environment.

Through a rigorous certification process, the program preserves ecologically sensitive areas, strengthens the public’s connection to nature, and preserves our shared heritage of star-filled night skies.

Advancing quality outdoor lighting

DarkSky works with communities, manufacturers, retailers, and other entities to evaluate and certify dark sky-friendly outdoor lighting for commercial, industrial, and residential use.

From street lighting and sports fields to garden and home fixtures, DarkSky is helping advance smarter, quality lighting.
